About Today: DIY Valentine's Gifts

From Jen Hubley, your About Today Editor
Valentine's Day is in about half an hour, and I still have no idea what to get for my sweetie. (Which reminds me: Sweetie, you're not allowed to read this for the next two weeks.)

Paint a Valentine's Day Card (With a Secret Message)
I like the idea of homemade gifts for Valentine's Day, mostly because all the non-homemade gifts are that unique combination of expensive and impersonal that seems to almost cancel itself out.

Valentine's Day Photography Ideas
Whatever else we do, we definitely should take some kind of coupley picture. Mostly because every couple needs at least one picture in which neither person is making a face or making rabbit ears behind each other's head. And we don't have any yet.

Homemade Valentine's Day Gift Ideas
The soap surprises are probably my favorite homemade gifts on this list.

Fun Places To Go

From Teresa Plowright, your Guide to Family Vacations
Quebec City is a town that knows how to celebrate winter: when its Carnival opened last weekend, families flocked to the festival grounds to enjoy snow rafting, a giant ferris wheel, free outdoor concerts, human foozball, and much kiddie fun in the snow.

Quebec City Winter Carnival
The Carnival spans three weekends and continues until February 13th, so if you hurry you can still catch this year's fun including a night parade. Quebec City's Carnival, like Mardi Gras, originated as a celebration held just before the austere season of Lent in the Catholic calendar. And speaking of Mardi Gras...

Family Friendly Mardi Gras in New England
A few weeks ago, we recommended some places with family-friendly Mardi Gras festivities. This week we can add events in Vermont, Maine, and New Hampshire. Mardi Gras falls on Tuesday March 8th this year.

Chinese New Year All Over the World
Would you have guessed that Chinese New Year is one of the biggest events of the year -- in Paris? Paris has a major parade, as does San Francisco, and Manchester, and Sydney.... not to mention the extravaganzas in China and Hong Kong. About.com's Guide for China Travel has rounded up celebrations world-wide for the Year of the Rabbit.

Travel Games to Print Out
Sometimes kids like the low-tech simple things, like these printable games that can help pass the time on a car trip or plane trip: Connect the Dots, Tic Tac Toe, Animals A to Z... You'll also find two versions of The License Plate Game, a good game for kids who tend to get carsick: focusing the gaze outside the car is a recommended way to avoid motion sickness.
