From Jolinda Hackett, your Guide to Vegetarian Food
A fun round-up of some of the news circulating the vegetarian world as of late. Have a great week, everyone!

Men, you'll want to eat celery after reading this!
This is one of those news stories that is really only peripherally related to vegetarian food, but I still just can't help but share it. A couple of doctors decided, for some reason, to study celery. Or perhaps they were trying to figure out how to pick up chicks (the real reason they went to med school, perhaps?). At any rate, these doctors have discovered that the real way to pick up chicks is not contained in aftershave, lifting weights, cheesy pick-up lines or even in chocolate and roses. No, the real secret to making men attractive to the opposite sex is in celery. That's right, celery. Find out more.

Vegan chicken at Chipotle!
Have I mentioned lately how much I love it when fast food restaurants offer vegetarian and vegan menu options (Oh yeah, that's right, I have!)? Well, add another one to the list! Chipotle, a Mexican fast-food chain has long been a favorite with vegetarians and vegans as a place to get a quick and fresh meal (and also because they offer free guacamole on meatless burritos- yay!), is giving a test run at six locations to see what customers think of a new vegan "chicken" in their burritos and tacos. They're using "Gardein" brand's blend of soy and wheat protein, which after this and being featured on Oprah, must have a genius leading their marketing team. Read on to find out where.

Convinced? Try these recipes using celery
Although the article suggests men should "chomp a few sticks" of celery before a night out, if you'd rather incorporate it into a meal, here's a few veggie recipes using celery:
  • Three Bean Salad with Celery
  • No-mayo Potato Salad with Kale and Peas (pictured)
  • Hominy and Cheese Salad
  • Couscous Pilaf with Black Beans
  • Summery Chickpea Salad
  • Wild Rice and Mushroom Pilaf

  • Forum Chatter Round Up
Haven't checked into the vegetarian forums lately? Here's what you've been missing:
  • Allergic to soy and gluten Eibhir posts that he/she is trying to help a friend go veg, but this friend is allergic to just about everything one could possibly be allergic to, including soy, gluten and nuts. Yikes! Some posters jump in with some great responses. See what they've got to say, or help out with some tips.
  • Pregnant and vegetarian A concerned mom-to-be asks for reassurance that she can have a healthy pregnancy while staying vegetarian. Several moms offer tips for getting plenty of nutrients, and, of course, someone has to tell an anecdote of a "friend-of-a-friend" who randomly started eating steak while preggers.
  • Can lie detectors detect suffering carrots? A perfectly innocent debate about a Mythbusters episode on TV descends into incomprehensible nonsense about yogurt and stomach acids. What fun!

Today is Memorial Day in the United States. Most people think of it as a day off from work, or an excuse to grill, or maybe a chance to get discounts at their favorite stores. But there is, of course, a deeper meaning to Memorial Day.

    Memorial Day vs. Veteran's Day
Many of us get Memorial Day confused with Veteran's Day. And when I say "many of us," I mean "me."

    The History of Memorial Day

About Today: Memorial Day Coupons and Deals

    About.com

From Jen Hubley, your About Today Editor
Memorial Day is one of the greatest shopping holidays on my calendar. So many stores offer deals, and thanks to the magic of the interwebs, I can often skip the lines at the stores and do my consumption inconspicuously in the comfort of my own home.

Memorial Day Weekend Coupons and Deals
Some of these coupons are online deals, and some will require you to race around an actual store with a sheaf of coupons clutched in your hot little hand. But I suggest that you think of it as a sport.

Get Free Shipping When You Shop Online
Like I said, I much prefer to do my shopping online. The only thing I don't love about online shopping is seeing those shipping charges tacked onto my bill before I click "buy."

    Curb Shopping on Long Weekends
There's nothing better than entirely free stuff. And as they say, "One man's trash is another man's brand-new kitchen table." I think I saw that embroidered on a sampler somewhere.

    How to Haggle
I will leave the warm glow of my computer screen at some point this weekend, in order to make a brief foray to the local flea market. My goal is to come home with more stuff than I have shelf space, and still have money in my pocket.

From Laura K. Lawless, your Guide to French Language
Bonjour mes amis ! Today's bilingual article is about one of France's most famous cheeses.

    Roquefort : village de fromage
Le village de Roquefort-sur-Soulzon (12) est célèbre pour son fromage éponyme, mais étrangement le roquefort n'y est pas forcément produit.

    Au pif
What does the French expression "au pif" mean? Learn all about it here.

    Informal French
If you've ever listened to native French speakers talk to friends or family, you've almost certainly noticed that they don't sound like your French teacher or audio tapes. You might notice missing or different words, funny contractions, and strange grammar. This is because French, like any other language, has different registers (levels of formality). This lesson summarizes the various informal and familiar sounds and structures of French.

    French quiz: Savoir vs Connaître
Do you know the difference between the two French verbs that mean "to know"? Test yourself with this quiz, or take a look at the lesson to review.
