About Today: How to Treat a Sunburn

From Jen Hubley, your About Today Editor
I am a see-through person, with visible veins and arteries just like the plastic model of the human body you had in science class when you were a kid. As a result, I sunburn easily.

How to Treat a Sunburn
Of course, I do my best to avoid it. But sometimes I forget to reapply my sunscreen, or leave my giant sun-defeating hat at home, and then I need to figure out how to make the burn hurt less.

Tips for Treating Sunburn
You can't really treat sunburn itself, but you can minimize the discomfort. Also, write in your diary, "I will wear sunscreen, I will wear sunscreen" until you remember to do so.

Sunscreen Myths vs. Facts
In my mind, putting on sunscreen just once makes you totally immune to the sun's rays forever. For the whole rest of your life, no sunscreen, it's cool. In reality, well, you see me with this aloe, right?

Video: How to Soothe a Sunburn
My friend Sara invented a sunburn cure. "You stub your toe, the little one, on something hard," she said. "Then you won't care." These soothers are probably more effective.

Fun Places To Go

From Teresa Plowright, your Guide to Family Vacations
I just returned from a fascinating preview "hard-hat" tour of Disney's new Aulani Resort in Hawaii, which will be ready to welcome families in August 2011.

Disney's Hawaii Resort - Aulani
You'll be able to start booking in August this year, for this new resort in the Ko Olina area of Oahu. The resort has a choice location on a sandy bay, some super features, and a dedication to Hawaiian culture -- expect beautiful design and layers of detailing. I'll be writing more about this resort soon... Meanwhile, now's a good time to check out Disney deals for other Disney destinations, for late summer and early fall.

Hawaii Resorts
I also learned first-hand last week that summer's a popular time for Hawaii family vacations: Waikiki Beach was full of folk sunning, swimming, or learning to surf, or trying out stand-up paddle-boarding in the newly-restored lagoon. Of course there are many quieter islands and areas for families, too.

Cartibbean: SPF Months at Beaches
Shifting sights to the Caribbean... "Summer" deals here continue on many islands, and at many resorts. Beaches family all inclusive resorts, for instance, are moving into their "SPF" months: and no, this isn't about a type of sunscreen. It's a recurring promotion called "Single Parents Fun", with good price breaks.

London With Kids
Taking another hop, across the pond: the exchange rate's good, and -- even better-- London's top museums are free. Head to the city of kings and queens, Mary Poppins, Oliver Twist, Platform 9-3/4... kids already "know" London and are all set to enjoy sightseeing.
