About Today: How to Buy a Hat for the Kentucky Derby

From Jen Hubley, your About Today Editor
This Saturday is Derby Day, which means that I will drag everyone I can find to a local watering hole, plunk giant hats on their heads, and force them to watch horse racing while drinking mint juleps.

Kentucky Derby Hat Buying Guide
If this doesn't sound like a good time to you, you are either a poor sport ... or haven't yet found the right hat. I will give you a hint: The bigger, the better.

How to Make a Mean Mint Julep
I would like to construct a hat with mint juleps on it, perhaps affixed to straws like those beer helmets people wear to baseball games. ONLY SO MUCH MORE ELEGANT.

Kentucky Derby Contenders
There is also a horse race today, although in the confusion of hats and beverages, one could forgive you for forgetting that.

Kentucky Derby Visitor's Guide
Unless, of course, you're lucky enough to be in Louisville today, and then you'll hear more about horses in the next 24 hours than you did during the whole of your life previously. (This goes for horse people as well as for newbies.)

About Family Vacations: June Vacation Ideas; Star Wars Weekends

Fun Places To Go

From Teresa Plowright, your Guide to Family Vacations
Some places are even better to visit in June than in the height of summer. Less crowds, no scorching temperatures, better availability...

June Family Vacation Ideas
If you aren't tied to a school schedule -- or if your school starts summer vacation early-- June could be your prime-time to visit Niagara Falls, Outer Banks NC, Yellowstone National Park, Virginia Beach... June's also the month for Father's Day getaways. And let's not forget some major solstice celebrations on the 21st, especially in northern lands of the midnight sun.

June in New York City
June in NYC's a great time of year for walking tours and enjoying Central Park, with the weather warm but not summertime-hot. Outdoor concerts are starting up, and Shakespeare in the Park... Check out NYC in June at About.com's New York City Travel site.

Star Wars Weekends at Disney World
You can also channel your inner Obi Wan or Princess Leia in June. Dress up (or not) for one of the Star Wars Weekends at Disney's Hollywood Studios (that start on May 21 2010). The Star Tours attraction stages special fun, such as "Jedi Training Academy", where youngsters battle lightsabres with Darth Vader. Also enjoy parades, character meet'n'greets, Star Wars celebrities, and special edition merchandise.

More Florida Family Vacations
Resorts, beaches, theme parks-- ideas about where to go, in this most popular state for family vacations. (Note, though, that in Florida most schools are out by June, so you may have company at your family vacation spot.)
